Peshawar: Peshawar Central Police Office (CPO) has sought details of tear gas stockpile after reports of tear gas being used in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in Islamabad.

Law enforcement agencies have arrested nearly 1,000 supporters of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan who stormed the federal capital this week demanding his release, the city’s police chief said on Wednesday.

Islamabad’s police chief, Ali Nasir Rizvi, said weapons including automatic rifles and tear gas guns were seized from the protest site where thousands of people had gathered.

Meanwhile, Khan’s aides alleged, without providing evidence, that hundreds of people were injured by gunshots during chaotic scenes in the heart of Islamabad overnight as police dispersed protesters led by Khan’s wife who Security barriers were breached. Meanwhile, Peshawar CPO has written to all Deputy Inspector Generals and heads of other units.

The CPO noted that a letter had been written on November 21 instructing the police department to remain apolitical during the political tension, which was suspected over the alleged use of tear gas during the protests.

The CPO ordered that “details of the exact storage of tear gas available and its use during the last one week be provided.”

The CPO said a team would physically verify the stock available in various units and areas.

“There have been reports on social and electronic media that tear gas has been allegedly used by protesters during the ongoing protests in Islamabad. Therefore, in view of the above, AIG/Logistics, CPO, Peshawar A team will be deputed from the office for physical verification of available stocks of tear gas with regions and different units.CPO, Peshawar, by different regions/units on monthly basis.
