SENSEX TODAY: BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty opened Wednesday’s trading session on a cautious note, reflecting the subdued trend in Asian markets.

Sensex Today: The benchmark equity indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50, ended higher on Wednesday, reflecting gains in global markets. The BSE Sensex climbed to an intraday high of 80,511.15 before closing at 80,234.08, up 230.02 points or 0.29% from the previous session.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 ended up 80.40 points or 0.33 per cent at 24,274.90. On Wednesday, the index traded in a range of 24,354.55 to 24,145.65.

Of the 50 stocks in the Nifty50, 25 closed in the green, led by Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, BEL, Trent, and NTPC, some of which gained as much as 11.56%. On the other hand, Apollo Hospitals, Titan Company, Wipro, Shriram Finance, and Hindalco were among the 25 stocks in the red, with losses of up to 1.34%.

NTPC Green Energy, which debuted today, rose 8.74 percent to close at Rs 121.25 on the NSE, higher than its IPO price of Rs 108.

In the broader markets, small cap stocks fared better, with the Nifty Small Cap 100 index gaining 1.30%. The Nifty Midcap 100 index also gained 0.64 percent.

Sector performance was largely positive with all indices closing in the green except the Nifty IT, Pharma, PSU Bank, Realty, and Healthcare sectors.

Adani stock rose as much as 20 percent after the group’s clarification.

Shares of Adani group companies rose as much as 20 percent on the NSE on Wednesday after Adani Green Energy (AGEL) came clean about US bribery allegations. The company said Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and senior executive Vineet Jain had been cleared of all bribery charges by the US Department of Justice, although it acknowledged that the indictment included three counts.

Top performers included Adani Total Gas and Adani Power, both up 20 percent. Adani Green Energy rose 10% to close at Rs 988.40, while Adani Energy Solutions jumped 10% to Rs 660.80. Adani Enterprises saw an 11 percent gain, to Rs 2,399, and Adani Ports gained 5.9 percent. Adani Wilmar gained 8%.

ACC and Ambuja Cement also recorded gains, each gaining more than 4 percent, while NDTV added 9 percent.

In a filing with the exchange, AGEL said media reports on allegations of bribery and corruption against Adani officials were “false”.

Global indicators:

Asian markets were mixed on Wednesday despite US stocks closing at record highs. Concerns over President Trump’s threat to increase tariffs on China and neighboring countries weighed on market sentiment.

The Nikkei, Shanghai Composite, and Kospi fell as much as 0.7 percent, while the Hang Seng, Taiwan, and Straits Times saw modest gains.

In the US, the Dow rose 124 points, up 650 points from its intraday low, ahead of US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes and third-quarter GDP data. Closed on high. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ also gained 0.5%.

Crude oil prices fell slightly after reports of a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah. Crude futures fell below $68 a barrel while Brent crude fell to $72 a barrel. Gold held steady around $2,650.
