6 people died in a fire in a hospital in Tamil Nadu, India – SUCH TV

At least six people were killed in a fire at a private hospital in southern India, police said Friday, and more than two dozen were injured.

Building fires are common in India due to lack of fire extinguishers and routine disregard for safety regulations.

A fire broke out late Thursday night in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and the cause is still being investigated.

All six victims were found unconscious inside an elevator at a hospital in the city of Dindigul, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Police Superintendent A Pradeep told AFP that around 30 people were injured but all were “stable”.

The Times of India newspaper reported that the fire started in the reception area on the ground floor and quickly spread to other floors.

The fire comes weeks after 10 newborns died in a fire at a hospital in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this year, a similar fire broke out at a children’s hospital in New Delhi, killing six infants.

At least 27 people, including several children, died when a fire broke out in a crowded amusement park arcade in the western state of Gujarat in May.
