’10 Things I Hate About You’ stars Julia Stiles, Larisa Oleynik reunite

The Stratford sisters are back together.

At least they were for a night, as 10 Things I Hate About You actors Julia Stiles, who played Kat, and Larisa Oleynik, who portrayed her younger sister Bianca, met up at a New York City screening of Wish You Were Here, which Stiles directed.

The actresses starred in the 1999 film that put a teenage spin on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. Featuring an all-star cast that included the late Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union, and Andrew Keegan, the plot revolves around how Bianca is not allowed to date until her older sister Kat does. So Cameron (Gordon-Levitt), who wants to date Bianca, convinces Patrick Verona (Ledger) to take out Kat, though she is uninterested in dating. Complications arise, hilarity ensues, but by the end of it, as in many good romances, Kat and Patrick actually fall for each other.

The film was a hit with its target audience, and it was recognized with two awards at that year’s MTV Movie Awards: Breakthrough Female Performance for Stiles and, for Ledger, Best Musical Performance, for the scene in which he serenades Kat on the high school football field with the classic Frankie Valli song “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” (The scene was iconic enough that it was among those parodied in 2001’s Not Another Teen Movie.)

Even before they met up, Stiles told PEOPLE that she was looking forward to seeing the actress, who’s actually the same age as her, 43.

“I know that Larisa Oleynik is gonna be here tonight, which will be wonderful to see her,” Stiles told PEOPLE when she arrived. “We kind of, you know, the way that it’s hard to keep in touch with people but over text messages.”

The actress, who has gone on to star in movies such as Jason Bourne and Hustlers, said she keeps in touch with other cast members “a little bit, but from a distance.” She explained that the role of Kat remains the one that she’s most often recognized for, which she appreciates, because it was special one for her to step into.

“I was a 17-year-old actress auditioning and getting a lot of annoying comments like, ‘You’re too serious’ or ‘you need to be sexier’ or ‘smile more,’ and I was vulnerable to it because I was still trying to figure out who I was,” Stiles told the magazine. “And then I read 10 Things I Hate About You and Kat Stratford was like this feisty outspoken girl who did not care what people thought about her.”

Being in it “meant a lot,” she said. “And that it resonates with people still is so great.”

Oleynik, meanwhile, has appeared on shows such as Mad Men, Pretty Little Liars, and Hawaii Five-O.
